How blind we become to the mental illnesses hibernating
in the minds of
the young,
the old,
the ugly,
the beautiful;
they were all alone.
This fight against an intangible monster, it
tackles us from behind when we least
expect it.
It sneaks behind us at first, then it arrives at
full force.
You start noticing the little things -
the loss of appetite,
the bags under your eyes,
the weight loss (or gain);
then it starts consuming us from the inside:
the social life dissipates into lonely nights in your bedroom
with the door closed shut, people we loved
and cared about standing on the other side.
Marks on your wrists, hidden underneath long sleeves and bracelets.
The darkness becomes a long-time friend,
even though you've only known each other for a few weeks;
it's like he knows you better than anyone else.
The months go by now, with thoughts popping up in your head
about jumping off buildings, or
swallowing a bottle of Advil;
the voices - your voice - talk to you every day,
but you don't know what to do.
You don't trust yourself, or anyone, so, instead
you fight to stay alive.
