Something about Amelia tugged at this string in my heart – the last time this happened, I fell for a girl who wasn’t worth my time. I was courted, used, and kicked to the curb. But Amelia? She’s different.
When she walks into the room, the air is traced with a certain thickness; people part like the Red Sea when Moses puts down his staff, and she doesn’t even notice. Her warm-brown eyes are the perfect illustration of melted chocolate and when she looked at you, it made you feel like you were the center of her world. She would give you the undivided attention when you least expected it. But above all, her laugh was the highlight of her character – tell her a joke and she’ll laugh freely like you’ve made her day.
It happened a couple months ago: Amelia tagged along with Leo for lunch with us and acknowledged my existence (she laughed at my corny jokes), I started to develop feelings for her. I couldn’t help it – I didn’t even care that she was dating Leo. Anyone with eyes could tell they weren’t a good match anyways; he craved attention from the group, whereas Amelia never wanted to take the spotlight. Besides, the girls in my school were either total nerds, or cake faces.
Don’t get me wrong – Amelia works hard on academics, hardly going out for parties or school events. But if you had a problem, or merely needed a friend to rant to, she was the person to go to. Her heart was always in the right place, her mind thinking of a million different ways to help you, and her voice so soft that it could send you into a deep sleep.
I know I shouldn’t even be thinking of her this way, but I can’t help it – ever since Leo told me about their breakup, which was pretty bad from what I heard, I couldn’t help and wonder how to approach her. Anyone with eyes could see that Leo and Amelia were opposites in every single way. She needed someone who could be there for her no matter the circumstances, who placed her as a priority.
It sends negative vibes, doesn’t it, that I’m already thinking about how to get closer to Amelia? I don’t want to be the cheap guy chasing after a recently-single girl who went through a rough breakup. I think that it’d be best to just develop our friendship first, before we can even progress to that romantic-level. Leo definitely won’t be happy with me, although we were never good friends to begin with; everyone knows we only talk when we eat lunch as a group. Are we friends, though? Nope.
So, I’ll do what I think is right and within reason.
