Hey guys. I haven't posted excerpts in awhile, so I thought I'd share some stuff with you.
“You think we’ll stay together after high school?”
Leo’s head is in my lap as I ask this question. We’re sitting at the jungle gym in the park, biding our time together during lunch. This was the only time we got to see each other, besides after school when I walk him to the bus, and we really wanted to make every second count.
“Ames, of course we will. You know I care about you more than anything, even school.”
I love it when it calls me by my nickname.
My fingers run through his wavy hair as I think about his response. He sounded so certain, and that’s what worried me.
I didn’t say anything back, only because I had no clue how it would work out between us.
He must have sensed my unwavering nervousness because he gets up, sits beside me, and takes both my hands in his.
“Ames, you know everything will work out. You’re going to Hernmount University and I’m going to Crawford College. You’ll be in Toronto, I’ll be in Scarborough. It’s not even that far.”
“I just feel like we don’t have a plan. When are we even going to see each other?”
“We can visit each other every weekend. When you go to your dad’s house, just take the bus to my campus. And the other weeks I can come downtown to visit you.”
“Yeah, but we’re going to be so busy with school work…how will we even get the time to visit each other all the time?”
“We’ll have time. Even if it’s just 1 or 2 hours, who cares? What matters is that we get to see each other at least every month.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
He pulls me into a warm embrace.
“Ames, you know I’ll try my best, right? I’ll miss you so much, and I know you’ll miss me too. Besides, we can always call each other every day, or every week. There’s always a way. We just have to try.”
“You know what? You’re right. I’m just stressed out right now, thinking about us being apart.”
“Stop worrying and enjoy the moments we have together.”
“Okay.”
We sit there for a couple more minutes, before the school bell rings for class again, holding one another.
I want to remember this – sitting here in silence, his hands wrapped around mine, keeping me close.
